Generative search
Improve how generative search systems understand and represent your business
SEO establishes discoverability. GEO improves the clarity, structure and authority of the information generative systems may retrieve and use.
GEO assessments evaluate observable discoverability, structure, clarity and authority signals. They do not guarantee visibility or citations within third-party AI systems.
When someone asks an assistant which firms do a particular kind of work in a particular place, the system does not consult a ranking. It assembles an answer from information it can retrieve and has some basis for trusting. Your business appears in that answer only if it can be identified as the kind of organisation the question is about, and only if what the system can find about it is specific enough to state.
This is a different problem from ranking, and most websites are poorly set up for it. Not because they are badly built, but because they were written for a human who arrived already knowing roughly what the business does. A page headed “Solutions” followed by three paragraphs about partnership and excellence reads acceptably to that person. To a system attempting to establish what this organisation actually offers, it contains nothing.
GEO addresses that gap. It is largely a matter of saying plainly what is currently implied, structuring it so it can be parsed, and making the claims verifiable enough to be repeated.
The distinction
How GEO differs from SEO
The two share foundations. Both require a site that can be crawled, content that exists in the response, and pages that state what they are about. Beyond that they diverge, because they are answering different questions.
Search asks which page best matches this query. Generative retrieval asks what is true about this organisation, and whether that can be stated with enough confidence to include in an answer. The second question rewards precision and corroboration in a way the first does not.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of interest | The page | The organisation and its claims |
| Question asked | Which page answers this query | What can be stated about this entity |
| Rewards | Relevance and authority | Clarity, specificity and corroboration |
| Failure mode | Ranking below competitors | Being omitted, or described inaccurately |
| Measurement | Position and traffic | Observable signals; no published ranking exists |
Scope
What GEO work addresses
Every item here is an observable property of your website and its public presence. None of it involves attempting to influence a system directly, because there is no mechanism to do so.
Entity clarity
- Whether the organisation is formally identified in machine-readable form
- Whether it names itself consistently everywhere it appears
- Whether its identity is corroborated by sources it controls elsewhere
- Whether what it does is stated rather than implied
- Whether where it operates is determinable
Service definition
- Whether each offering is individually identifiable
- Whether services are named as buyers would name them
- Whether who each service is for is stated
- Whether pages exist per service rather than one combined page
- Whether the structured description matches the visible content
Authority and expertise
- Whether substantive content is attributed to named people
- Whether those people's expertise is described and verifiable
- Whether the site publishes original information or only restates
- Whether claims are specific enough to be checked
- Whether qualifications are stated accurately and without embellishment
Retrievability
- Whether content exists in the initial response
- Whether the structure of a page reflects its actual argument
- Whether definitions and direct answers appear where they can be found
- Whether pages are reachable without interaction
- Whether automated access is inadvertently blocked
Consistency
- Whether the same facts appear the same way across the site
- Whether external profiles agree with the website
- Whether outdated claims persist in less-visited corners
- Whether contact and location details are uniform
Structured knowledge
- Organisation, service and article markup where genuinely applicable
- Whether markup accurately describes what is visible
- Relationships between entities rather than isolated declarations
- Removal of markup that overstates or misrepresents
A generative system will not describe your business more clearly than your website does. Most GEO work is the unglamorous business of saying plainly what a site currently leaves to be inferred.
What we do not claim
The honest limits of this work
GEO is a young discipline with a great deal of confident advice attached to it. These are the claims IXSEO will not make.
No guaranteed citations
No system offers a submission process, a ranking, or any commitment about inclusion. Anyone guaranteeing that your business will be cited is describing something they cannot control.
No access to private rankings
There is no dashboard showing where you stand inside a generative system, because no such measure is published. Anyone presenting one has constructed it themselves from sampling, and should say so.
Schema is not a shortcut
Structured data helps a machine parse a page. It does not make an unclear page clear, and markup that overstates what a page contains is a liability rather than an advantage.
Volume is not the answer
Publishing large quantities of generated content to increase surface area is precisely the pattern these systems are being tuned to discount. It is also the fastest way to damage a site's credibility.
